1.1 What is the Blueprint for Red Fox Rabies Prevention and Control?

This document aims to help countries implement rabies control programmes, in order to reduce human rabies cases and potentially eliminate rabies from areas where red fox-mediated rabies is present. It reflects current state-of-the-art control by compiling background information, general considerations and basic principles in a modern question-and-answer format.

While the first blueprint of this series deals with dog rabies control, this blueprint is devoted to the control of red fox-mediated rabies either endemic or reintroduced after a long period of absence in an area. Additional blueprints dealing with other wildlife rabies reservoirs, such as raccoons, raccoon dogs, skunks, coyotes and grey foxes, and rabies control may be developed in the near future.
