1.12 Is it possible to control and eliminate fox rabies?

Yes. Recent research advances and pioneering developments, including efficacious and safe oral rabies virus vaccines, production of machine-made baits attractive to a variety of species, automated aerial bait distribution and adequate vaccination strategies, have made ORV of foxes a powerful tool for combating fox rabies on a global scale.

Diagnostic and surveillance approaches are available to help evaluate the impact of control and elimination efforts. Since the late 1970s, this concept has been successfully used to eliminate fox rabies in large parts of Western Europe, Canada and the US. Well-designed ORV programmes provide the most effective approach to managing rabies in wildlife populations, including foxes.
