5.3.9.4 Why is it important to motivate wildlife biologists, hunters and trappers?

Biologists, hunters and trappers are in the front line of fox rabies control. Their involvement is essential to adequately conduct surveillance and monitoring. They are also important for manual distribution of baits on the ground in areas where baits cannot be distributed by air, unless other staff is responsible for these activities.

As ORV is a long-term commitment, the motivation among all people involved is necessary to guarantee ultimate success. For this reason, regular meetings should be held or miscellaneous articles be published in official gazettes or journals of those associations to inform people about the results of ongoing campaigns.

To ensure adequate sample collection for rabies surveillance and monitoring of ORV campaigns in some Eureopean countries incentive payments had been implemented.
