5.6.6 What do we need to do if rabies is detected in a rabies-free area?

Once a rabies case has been detected in a rabies-free area, diagnosis of infected animals and/or humans should be confirmed by the national reference laboratory as soon as possible. In case of confirmation sequencing (e.g. partial N gene) of the isolate should be conducted to identify the potential origin of the RABV as the detection of a dog-mediated rabies case in an illegally imported pet or other animal, or a fox-mediated rabies case would each imply different measures (see below).
